Killing people doesn't automatically equal evil. (In my life I would say that there really is no such thing as good and evil and those are just concepts we use to say that our ideals and wants are better then others but for the sake of the argument I'll keep with the evil thing).
Killing people and causing pain for no other reason but for your own enjoyment is evil but what Light did was kill for a purpose, true, I would not like it if Light killed my loved ones for the sake of a world I did not believe in but we can't just simplify it as an act of evil bcs it really wasn't.
Light is striving to achieve something good, my version of good might not be the same but it is still a something people would consider good.

I love how the creators of death note do this thing with anime, first they create basic rules about the nature of power the Mc inherits and apply it in a way that makes you appreciate the rules.
